Hi,  Just wanted to let you know about Joe.

Joe has been in the hospital since Monday,  finally got him home last night.  Last weekend, on Friday night he went to bed, a while later he came out and said he was having a hard time breathing when he laid down, so he sat in his recliner for a while, then would try and go back to bed, so he didn’t get much sleep. He had a cold a couple of weeks ago, and a cough afterwards, but it was loose, etc, he would cough up some stuff, so when he was having a hard time breathing we thought maybe he might be getting pneumonia, so I Doctored him all weekend, he was a little better Sunday afternoon, but he would still have trouble breathing when he laid flat in bed, so Monday morning, he got up and said he had better go to the Dr. because his chest felt funny. So I called his kidney Dr. and she was book full, so we went to Mercy Urgent-care right around the corner from her.  They took and EKG and a chest Xray, and the Xray showed he had a lot of fluid around his lungs and heart. So they sent down to Mercy Hospital so they could run more test. They put him on medication right away, to get the fluid out of his body. He also had a heart murmur, so they was going to do a Echogram of his heart Tues. morning,  so we waited all day for the results,  finally about 4:00, the Dr. came in with the results, and they were not good.  His heart is only working 20 to 25 %, so they call that heart failure. They called is a cardiologist, they thought maybe there was blockage somewhere, so the cardiologist decided to do a Heart catheterization Wednesday morning.

Joe has had Renel Kidney Failure for 27 years, and his only one enlarge kidney, has only been working 15% now for 3 years. So

we kind of new when they do the heart catheterization,  they run die through him, that would not be good on the kidney.   They did find some good news from that, all of his arteries are almost perfectly clear, which they were real surprised for an 80 yr. old man. So the problem is the main valve, so they  are putting him on a medication for about 3 weeks, that will hopefully help the heart get stronger, they would like it to get up to 40%. They call it heart failure. So Thurs. morning  they put a temporary port in for dialysis, early in the morning, then at 3:00 in the afternoon, they were going to put a fusial in the vain of his arm which would be permanent one for dialysis, but things got changed, because of his kidney results Thurs. morning, they decided to give him his first dialysis treatment.

So they took him down for that at noon, said it would be about 3 ½ hrs. He got along really good with that, in fact he has been feeling real good and looking real good after Monday, when they started getting that fluid out of his body, he could breathe real good again,  and finally could get some sleep. He has been very lucky he hasn’t had any pain at all, he has been feeling really good all the time he has been in the hospital.

Anyway, they discharged him last night, we got home about 8:00. So today, he has to go back to the hospital for another dialysis treatment, then starting next week, he will be having treatments 3 times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, for the rest of his life. They said after a week or so, he would probably have more energy than he has had for a long time.

So we are doing a lot of praying for him, we hope now that the fluid will be kept away from his heart, and with the medication for his heart, it will help make the heart get stronger and hope it can get it up to working 40 %. Now that he is on dialysis, that will keep the heart from working so hard to purify his blood. So hopefully that will help too.

So it has been a crazy week.  We were really shocked when we got his Echogram back, he has never had any problem with his heart. They don’t know how long his heart has been that way and they don’t how long the fluid has been building up.

We are all praying real hard that his heart will heal up on its own with the medication they are giving him.

Will update you if anything changes.  So keep in touch.

Bye for now,  Clara
