EAA Chapter 493 Minutes of June 19, 2018 Monthly Meeting
The June 19, 2018 monthly meeting of EAA Chapter 493 was called to order by President Bob Reece at 7pm in the renovated conference room of the Terminal building, Mathis Field, San Angelo, Texas, on a hot summer evening. Present were 13 members, 1 new member, and 2 guests. The guests, Brian Thompson and son Brad, were introduced by Vice-President Ron Lentz. The Thompsons had previously visited the EAA Ch 493 table manned by Ron Lentz and Andy Spinks at a prior activity. The new member is Philip Meredith. Philip had previously visited a Ch 493 meeting, and signed up tonight. He is a paramedic, FAA Flight Instructor, and long time pilot and aircraft owner.
Bob Reece then turned the meeting over to procedural matters. Upon voice vote, the Minutes of the May, 2018 meeting of the Chapter were approved as published on the Chapter Reflector. Treasurer Andy Spinks gave the Treasurer’s report (current balance of $1,777.72), which was also approved by voice vote.
Next, President Bob Reece re-introduced new member Philip Meredith. Philip is a representative of the EAA IMC Club. Philip spoke about the IMC Club, which is a program run in conjunction with and through the EAA National organization, to promote Instrument flight safety, education, training, and proficiency. Philip indicated that he would be available to any member as an IMC safety pilot, and offered to assist any member with any questions about the IMC Club or recurrent training. There is no fee to join the IMC Club. More information relating to the IMC Club can be obtained at the EAA National web site, www.eaa.org.
President Bob Reece also provided literature and information from EAA National about the upcoming Oshkosh EAA Airventure 2018 airshow. He then discussed builder’s patches that the Chapter had authorized and obtained several years ago, and passed out builder patches to those members who had built or substantially remodeled and flown an experimental aircraft. The Chapter has additional patches for those completing this process in the future.
Old business. There was no old business to address.
New business. Don Smucker reported that he had completed the exterior of his Velocity XL and it had been painted through the main coats, and had flown it home to his hangar at Ducote. Don also reported that his next door Ducote Air Park neighbor, Gregg Collum, who is just completing his private pilot training, recently contracted to purchase a Velocity aircraft, and has plans to have it delivered/flown to Ducote by the end of this month. Don observed that to the best of his knowledge, when Gregg Collum gets his Velocity delivered, that Ducote will be the only place in the country with two private owners of Velocity aircraft hangared and living adjacent to each other.
There being no further business, on motion made, seconded and passed by voice vote, the business portion of the meeting was adjourned.
President Bob Reece gave the evening’s program. The focus of his program was the processes and paperwork portion of getting a newly completed experimental aircraft inspected, an Airworthiness Certificate and Operating Limitations issued, and getting the aircraft registered with the FAA. The program also focused on getting the Repairman’s Certificate and how that operates, reserving and obtaining an aircraft N-Number, and other related issues. Bob also pointed out that the EAA National website has information to assist with the process and that the EAA National office even has a kit with all the necessary paperwork and forms, and also includes examples on how the paperwork should be filled out and related tips and procedures. The Amateur-Built Certification Kit can be purchased on the EAA National’s web site for a nominal fee ($19.95), and includes decals and even a metal ID plate. Bob concluded the program with a slide show of aircraft that passed inspections with flying colors at the annual Oshkosh airshow. Bob is in charge of the judging crews for judging aircraft flown to the annual airshow.
The next monthly EAA Chapter 493 meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 17 at 7pm at the renovated conference room of the Terminal building, Mathis Field, San Angelo, Texas. Secretary Don Smucker will be traveling and will miss this meeting; Don and Nancy Treadwell volunteered to produce the meeting minutes during Don’s absence.
