Shuster backs down on last-minute ATC kerfuffle
Less than 24 hours after proposing an amendment that had shades of his previous effort to "privatize" air traffic control, Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., backed down on his plans thanks to an immediate outpouring of opposition by general aviation pilots. In response to calls by AOPA and other general aviation associations for action, pilots flooded the switchboard at the US House of Representatives, telling their members of Congress to oppose Section 5 of Shuster's "manager's amendment" to H.R. 4, the bill to provide long-term funding to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tammie Jo Shults' heroism puts spotlight on female pilots making history
Tammie Jo Shults, the Southwest pilot and former US Navy fighter pilot who safely landed a depressurized aircraft after an engine failed, is earning widespread praise for her cool-headed response to the crisis. She joins a number of other female pilots, who have often been overlooked for their historic accomplishments during the past century, including Capt. Stephanie Johnson and First Officer Dawn Cook, who became the first African-American women to fly as part of a "mainline" Delta flight; Lt. Phetogo Molawa, South Africa's first black female pilot; Emilie Denis, the French navy's first female fighter pilot; and Jo Salter, the Royal Air Force's first female strike-attack combat pilot.

Correction
The summary, "Breaking: Airline Trojan Horse threatens US ATC system," in Tuesday's edition of Aviation eBrief should have referred to the outgoing chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa. SmartBrief regrets the error.
