Here is a discussion from another forum. The guy answering (Kurt) is an FAA controller.
Don S.
Kurt,
Does ADSB traffic on my ipad give me all the traffic I would get from the controllers on an IFR flight plan?

Damn Beagle... Dat's funny.
Words mean things in this business.. I just did not want someone to inadvertently believe they have an actual "flight plan", when they do not. That could lead to a false sense of security that I do not believe is fair to aviators. Better to know things are not as obvious as they should be.. and be prepared, than the alternative.

John,
It depends (don't you hate
that?). I went to an Oshkosh forum that was fantastic. Taught me so much
more than the FAA has bothered to share:
IF you have ADSB-out (which
includes IN), and this unit is what is feeding your Ipad, Then you will
get all the traffic that you are supposed to receive from controllers and more.
The airspace filters you
set in your program will dictated how much traffic you get displayed.
Such as a 15NM circle and 3000' above and below. It will also show you
trend information of that traffic
Controllers are, workload
permitting, supposed to issue traffic that is +/_1000'of you and appears
to be a factor. Above and Below that is not a requirement. I have
noticed a frightening trend lately, of the new controllers NOT issuing
VFR traffic to people, or issuing it and clearing someone through that
traffic even if they are not in sight.
So, If you have ADSB out/In, You would most likely get a better picture of traffic than most controllers will give you.
If you only have ADSB IN;
You will get Some traffic.. Since the ADSB system doesn't know where/who
you are,the only traffic you will get is actually designed for someone
else. This traffic IS real, but it is designed for the other aircraft
that does have ADSB-OUT.
So, Lets just say the aircraft that is causing traffic to be displayed to you is 13 NM behind you and going the other way.....
Traffic more than 2 NM in front of you will not be displayed (since
it is not a factor for the actual aircraft that is causing you to
receive traffic from ADSB.)
Misty and I bought one of
those hockey pucks at Oshkosh for our flight home. We knew about the
traffic issue, but bought it mainly for the weather.
We saw a huge amount of
traffic out the windows (Misty is Really good at finding other
airplanes!). We only saw 2 aircraft on the Ipad from OSH to Los Lunas
NM. This hockey puck was ADSB-IN only. Of course the brochure says you
will see traffic. I think it is quite misleading.
Hope that clears things up
somewhat. If not... Ping me again and I'll try to clarify whatever I
didn't explain well the first time :)
Kurt

Kurt,
Does ADSB traffic on my ipad give me all the traffic I would get from the controllers on an IFR flight plan?
