Dear Friends,
This is an Iowa Update from the Nelsons'. We are
safe & sound on our farm in Dysart, Iowa, but we are totally saturated
from rain that seems to never quit. We had 5.0" in the last 1/2
of April after arriving home. We got our first day of
planting on April 29. We received a total of
8.9" in May, but were finally able to finish planting on May 22 (usually done by
May 4-10). Many farmers have still not been able
to finish planting. Our crops are up and look okay but
it is essential that we have sun & warmer temperatures
soon!
We do not live near a river or creek so the "floods" have not
hurt us. However, we have had another 8" in June so far with
some water damage in our basement due to large amounts in short periods of
time. Some fields around us have ponds of water but thankfully
ours do not.
The tornados were 30-40 miles away but we are very familiar to
the town of Parkersburg that was hit. Waterloo (24 miles north of
us), La Porte City & Vinton (19 miles) & Cedar Rapids & Iowa City
(40 miles) are all on the Cedar River & have total
devastation throughout their cities &
towns. These rains & floods are setting historical records
this week. Cedar Rapids & Iowa City appear today to be on the
way to a New Orleans type of devastation in the downtown areas.
Our concern will now be what the weather does thru the rest of
the growing season. The corn will have shallow
roots due to too much moisture and will be sensitive to winds that would ruin
the crop later in the season.
"Thank you" for inquiring about our safety.
Adrienne & Larry
