Don…

I used a powder coating company on Warehouse Road several years ago.  They did not understand anything about airplanes or what I wanted done.  I was trying to get the brake backing plates and brake plate tubes that went into  2” fiberglass landing gear rods powered coated.  The first trip I showed them the brake back plates and tubes and  explained to them what I wanted…. They didn’t seem to understand anything I said.  So… took the assembly back to hangar and very carefully wrapped what I did not want powered coated with a heavy very sticky tape.  Took the assemblies back all taped up and discussed in great detail that I had taped the braking device, wheel hub axle, and bearing race on the axle so that they would not be coated or have over spray. !!!

Several days later they called and I picked up the whole assembly which had a total covering of powder on everything !!!  They had removed the tape and coated Axel, bearing races, moving brake parts….. every thing!!!  The guy that did it was not there and the young lady who I had to pay for her  to be release the brakes didn’t have any idea what had happened.

So…. Be very careful with who you use and that they have an IQ  higher than tire pressure !!!

And don’t believe that power coating is permanent and can’t be removed.    After it had been on the assemblies for about a week I removed all powder coating that I didn’t want down to the bare metal in about 30 minutes.  The whole episode was a pain in the butt…. But a great learning experience,

Subject: [EAA493] Looking for a local shop to paint engine mount

Good Morning,
I removed the engine mount from my airplane yesterday to paint it. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good local shop that could apply a powder coat of paint. It has some very light rust in some spots so sand blasting it clean maybe the best way to clean the engine mount. The mounting bolts fit very snugly in the mount so I'm guessing I should not paint inside the bolt mounts. I wanted to inspect the mount after sand blasting to insure all rust is gone and no visible signs of damage before painting.
Does anyone know of a good shop to use? Any other advise is appreciated. I have read that a light color is better for detecting future damage, so I thought a light gray would be a good choice.
