Don, 

I bought a Luscombe 8A about ten years ago and it had a Val com radio in it. The seller said that it was working well. I flew it home from Michigan and the radio was inop by the time I got home. Had a handheld and installed the Garmin com and transponder which was a flawless radio.

I did not have the Val com when it was new, so I can't say how well it worked when new.
