I don't believe the Ford will be ready to fly Saturday until 10:30 A.M. at the earliest. So the crew scheduled for the morning need not appear before 10:15 tomorrow morning.
Bob Reece discovered one cylinder at the top of the engine that had a loose induction fitting and we thought that was the problem with the back firing when switching mags during a mag check. Upon testing, the manifold pressure improved but the back firing continues. Bob plans to do a cold engine compression check in the morning starting at 10 o'clock. He will proceed with the diagnosis from there. R R Reece could use help from anyone with P&W R-985 experience. He could also use help from anyone willing to assist him by handing him tools while he is up on the ladder. Joe Christian was a big help today but he is going to a good friend's funeral tomorrow and won't be around for a few days.
I am going to Ducote Airpark in the morning to bring my airplane over after George Cude finishes the annual inspection. I plan to fly a few Young Eagles on Sunday afternoon from the flight line south of where the Skyline gas trucks are usually parked. If someone wants to bring their airplane over and join me they are welcome. We do not want to take anyone off the Ford Tri-Motor crew if it is repaired and returned to flight status, but I scheduled this flight with the kids in my church last summer, long before EAA asked us to host the Ford. If the Ford is still out of commission on Sunday I see no reason why we can't fly a few Young Eagle in the crowd that shows up to see the Ford. Saturday afternoon would be a better day to fly but I'm not sure when my plane will be ready tomorrow.
If my airplane is ready tomorrow afternoon and the Ford is still not flying, I will be offering Young Eagle flights.
Jim O'Hara will bring his P-38 over Saturday for display if the weather warms as much as predicted. Anyone else who wants to bring their airplane or old car over for display on Saturday is welcome.

Don,There was a problem with one of the Tri-Motor engines today. Looks like an intake leak of some type or a bad mag. Bob Reece and others were working on it when I left about 3:45pm today. We are supposed to call Steve Baker in the morning to see if we need to go in. I may go anyway, but we'll see. I believe Don T was planning to put out an email this evening with any updates. As you can see, nothing so far.How is Richard doing?gfhOn Friday, November 14, 2014 8:06 PM, Don Smucker via EAA493 <eaa493 [at] fly-web.us> wrote:
I will be there for both shifts for both Saturday and Sunday. And will be happy to do whatever is needed, including as starter one or both days.Don S.On Thursday, November 13, 2014 10:08 PM, Don Treadwell <donald [at] treadwellphotography.com> wrote:
Thanks to everyone who turned out today to support the Ford Tri-Motor Tour. Our pilot does not like to make changes in the Starter position, so we have three Starters designated to fill the next three days; one Starter per day. It is up to those three guys to get that plane started. The rest of us need to walk each group of passengers out to the plane, open the door for them, take their tickets, prompt them to not hit their heads while sitting down and buckling their seat belts. Close the door, remove the step and chocks while escorting the deplaning passengers back to the hangar. Ideally that takes about three to four of us to handle the loading and unloading while the starter monitors the ramp for stray civilians. Once we are back at the hangar someone should get the Starter's attention and yell CLEAR! The Starter then does one last deep knee bend to the ramp and check under the plane for feet, chocks, step and once certain that all is clear, point to the number one engine and signal to start. As the Ford arrives from each trip keep everyone away, including Skyline personnel who are use to helping park each customer. No one should be out on the ramp during arrival. Once the right engine has stopped, lead the next set of passengers toward the plane.Feel free to come out and help even if you are not listed in the last schedule. This is about team building, having fun, and promoting aviation. There will be many opportunities to give tours of the interior of the plane, especially after the flying ends for the day. I gave several tours Thursday evening and was asked by each person if that was my plane.Don
