Dear Classmates,
While I’ve done my share of fishing, I readily admit, “I’m not much of a fisherman.” Still I have my share of fond memories. Today “Louie Spray” popped into my mind, and my curiosity was tweaked. Knowing many of you love fishing, and also know of Louie, I thought you might enjoy some of what I discovered in my googling.
The details have escaped me, but I believe it was around 1956-57 when my father took me and a few other boy scouts to Camp Phillips, near Haugen, WI. As we traveled through Rice Lake, Dad pulled into a parking spot on the east side of N. Main Street, and said to us boys, “C’mon boys, I want to show you something.” We followed him into this non-descript Wisconsin tavern, and he pointed to this huge Musky on display (probably on the wall above the bar). It was the world record Musky, caught by Louie, the owner of the tavern.
I have only a vague recollection of that moment, but I am sure the bartender gave us the “full story” and history of that fish, and after our “ooohs-and-ahhs” we then walked out the door and continued on our journey. I knew the tavern burned down later, and from this story I learned the blaze happened in 1959; I recall the fish was destroyed in the fire.
What I found most interesting was the detailed story of when and how Louie caught the fish … here it is … http://www.indiantrailresort.com/LouieStory.htm. Expecting to read how Louie struggled “forever” to land the monster fish, I was disappointed with the abrupt ending. But who am I to judge, for I never fished for Musky.
Wishing you all the very best!
Steve
